Plants Observed During NRI Grazingland On-Site Data Collection

August 2023 (The latest update of the plant lists includes observations through 2022 and uses updated MLRA and LRR boundaries from the May 2022 Agriculture Handbook 296.)

Lists of plants observed during NRI Grazing Land On-Site data collection are provided through links on this web page. Range tables include plants observed on non-Federal rangelands since 2003 and BLM managed lands since 2011. Non-range tables include plants observed on non-Federal pastureland/grasslands since 2008.

Plant list tables have been assembled for two uses:

  • To provide lists of plants data collectors may encounter within an MLRA, State, or LRR region within the State. That information may help them focus on the plant they should learn to identify in the field. In addition, the lists may be used to pre-populate the Recent Plant List in the CASI (Please see Appendix A section A.3.2.1 of the NRI Grazing Land On-Site Data Collection Handbook of Instructions.) Pre-populated Recent Plant lists can save time in the field and reduce plant selection errors. Note that there may be additional plants encountered that are not on the list, but those can still be selected from the larger plant list within the CASI.
  • Quality assurance – The lists can be used to identify listed plants that are not expected to grow in these areas. If those plants are encountered in these areas, data collector should take pictures of the plants and get a second opinion from a plant specialist in their State.

The GrazingReview role is required to download these lists.

Description of Table Contents

The first column(s) in each plant list table identifies the geographic area, followed by the plant symbol, as well as scientific and common name. Additional columns include:

  • Total_entries – number of times within the geographic area that the plant was recorded in any data collection protocol
  • Points – number of points within the geographic area where the plant was observed
  • Frac_entries – ratio, within a geographic region, of Total_entries to sum of Total_entries
  • Frac_points – ratio, within a geographic region, of Points to total number of collected points for that region

CAUTION!

Frac_entries and Frac_points MUST NOT be interpreted as estimates of presence or cover of these plants within a region since each point represents different numbers of acres or proportions of the geographic area.
